INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR DATSUN PL510 FRONT SWAY BAR

 

(1)  JACK THE FRONT OF THE CAR UP AND PLACE ON JACKSTANDS.

 

(2)  REMOVE THE ORIGINAL FRONT SWAY BAR FROM THE CAR.

 

(3)  INSTALL THE STANDOFF WHERE THE ORIGINAL U-BRACKET BOLTED TO THE CHASSIS.  THE NARROWER PART (1" WIDE) SHOULD BE DOWN, AND THE WIDER PART (1-1/2" WIDE) SHOULD BE AGAINST THE CHASSIS FRAME RAIL.  THE STANDOFF SHOULD ANGLE FORWARD.  (NOTE: THESE BARS ARE DESIGNED TO BE BOLTED TO THE STOCK FRAME RAILS USING THE STOCK HARDWARE. BUT SINCE THESE CARS ARE RATHER ELDERLY, WE SUGGEST REINFORCING THIS AREA.  WE HAVE USED SEVERAL METHODS TO DO THIS. ONE IS TO WELD TUBES THRU THE FRAME RAIL AND USE LONG BOLTS.  ANOTHER IS TO CUT A WINDOW IN THE SIDE OF THE FRAME RAIL AND WELD A NEW NUT PLATE INSIDE THEN WELD THE RAIL CLOSED.)

 

(4)  BOLT THE SWAY BAR TO THE STANDOFFS USING THE PILLOW BLOCKS.  USE THE SPLIT COLLARS TO CENTER THE BAR.  BEFORE HOOKING UP THE LINKS, MAKE SURE THE BAR PIVOTS FREELY. IF IT BINDS, SHIM THE PILLOW BLOCKS UNTIL THE BAR PIVOTS FREELY.  (NOTE: AS THE BAR LOOSENS UP WITH WEAR, THESE SHIMS CAN BE REMOVED TO TIGHTEN IT BACK UP.)

 

(5)  HOOK THE LINKS TO THE SWAY BAR AND THE BRACKETS.

 

(6)  LOCATE THE BRACKETS ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE FRONT CONTROL ARM USING THE LINKS TO POSITION THEM.  MARK THEIR POSITION AND REMOVE THE CONTROL ARM FROM THE CAR.  POSITION THE BRACKETS PER YOUR MARKS, AND WELD THEM IN PLACE .82" APART.  REINSTALL THE CONTROL ARMS ON THE CAR.

 

(7)  REATTACH THE LINKS TO THE CONTROL ARMS.  IT IS BEST IF YOU SHORTEN THESE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.  FOR EXTREMELY LOW CARS IT'S A GOOD IDEA TO CUT THE ROD ENDS TO PULL THE BAR UP TOWARD THE CONTROL ARMS.  MAKE SURE YOUN LEAVE ENOUGH THREAD SO THAT YOU CAN ADJUST THE LINK LENGTH TO REMOVE ANY PRELOAD FROM THE BAR.
